Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy is one of the many innovative cell therapy offered by the Regenerative Cell Institute. PRP stimulates the natural healing and regeneration of tissues and this simple, safe procedure delivers lasting benefits for those suffering from joint pain, ligament damage, tendonitis, osteoarthritis, degenerative disc disease, and/or non-healing bone fractures.

The Board Certified doctors and interventional pain specialists at the Regenerative Cell Institute perform PRP therapy by extracting the patient’s own blood and then using an advanced centrifuge and precision separation technology, isolate the blood components and create a high yield, concentrated PRP solution to apply to wounds, injuries, damaged tissues, tendons, ligaments, joints, or discs. RCI’s proprietary PRP harvesting and preparation techniques yield the highest amount of platelet rich growth factors essential for healing and regeneration. By harvesting PRP to yield a higher concentration of platelets, Dr. Santos ensures patients receive the best possible outcomes and benefits from PRP therapy and PRP procedures.

What is Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)?

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is blood plasma that has been enriched with platelets. As a concentrated source of autologous platelets, PRP contains several different growth factors and other cytokines that stimulate the healing of bone and soft tissue. PRP is produced from a patient’s blood sample using an advanced centrifuge that spins and separates blood components and isolates the blood platelets. The platelets are rich in growth factors and have a regenerative capacity that stimulates the natural healing process. The growth factors released from the platelets help attract other repair cells, accelerating the healing process.

The growth factors present in platelets are called Cytokines. Cytokines are crucial to cellular communication and cumulatively accelerate both tissue and wound healing. PRP contains a variety of growth factors, cytokines, and proteins that collectively stimulate repair and regeneration processes of bone and soft tissue.

What is PRP therapy and how does it work?

PRP therapy is the process of injecting platelet rich plasma (RPR) to help speed the repair of joint, tendon, ligament, and muscle injuries. When soft tissue is injured, the body’s natural response is to flood the injured area with platelets; these platelets contain growth factors that attract stem cells and act as a catalyst for the body’s natural healing and repair functions. PRP therapy supercharges the platelets, giving them greater healing power and increasing the body’s innate ability to repair and regenerate tissue.

The process of creating PRP involves extracting the patient’s blood and running it through a centrifuge to separate the plasma and concentrate the blood platelets, which are then extracted and used for the PRP injection. PRP treatments are especially effective because the platelets in PRP have a stimulating effect on the stem cells in the targeted area, which in turn increases their ability to repair, regenerate, and ultimately heal.

The Regenerative Cell Institute takes PRP therapy to new heights by using a proprietary method of concentrating and activating blood platelets. Dr. Santos employs an advanced process that not only removes undesirable red and white blood cells that inhibit stem cells and cause inflammation, but also substantially increases the concentration of platelets.

What are the benefits of PRP therapy?

PRP therapy is a safe, simple, outpatient procedure that offers lasting benefits for those suffering from ligament and tendon damage. Patients undergoing PRP therapy will experience decreased pain and increased joint function and PRP therapy may even eliminate the need for more aggressive treatments such as long-term medication and/or surgery. In addition to the healing and regenerative benefits of PRP therapy, PRP treatments are both safe and all-natural. Since the platelets are harvested from the patient’s own blood, there is little to no risk of adverse reaction, rejection, or infection and the body is able to heal itself naturally, without the use of steroids or drugs.

How long does PRP take?

PRP therapy procedures are performed as out-patient procedures at the Regenerative Cell Institute. The procedure takes approximately 30 minutes and relieves pain without the risks associated with surgery – such as general anesthesia, hospital stays, or prolonged recovery. PRP therapy requires no bed rest or surgical rehabilitation and most patients are able to resume daily activities the same day.

What are the typical results?

PRP therapy essentially resolves pain by accelerating the healing process. Depending on the severity of the injury, patients may require an average of two injections, three months apart. Initial improvements are often seen in as little as a few weeks, with the healing process gradually increasing, resulting in long lasting results. PRP therapy is incredibly effective at relieving pain and greatly reduces the need for surgery by treating injured tissues before damage intensifies. MRI and ultrasound images have also proven that PRP therapy results in significant tissue repair.
