Stroke Recovery

When there is a disturbance in the blood supply to the brain, the result is a cerebro-vascular accident commonly called a stroke. When strokes occur, the lack of oxygen causes an ischemic brain injury which results in the destruction of vital brain tissue.

Each year, millions of Americans are affected by strokes. While the symptoms vary depending on the anatomic location of the event, extent, and duration of the tissue loss, stroke recovery traditionally includes both acute management and long term healing. In order for a long term healing, swelling must be reduced and neovascularization of damaged tissue must occur. Mesenchymal stem cell therapy may help promote healing after ischemic brain injury.

Stem Cell Therapy for Stroke Recovery

Stem cell therapy has proven effective for stroke recovery. High concentrations of stem cells and stromal vascular fraction (SVF), which is rich in mesenchymal stem cells and growth factors, are able to activate cells around damaged brain tissue to catalyze rapid healing and to improve brain function. Upon injection, the stem cells migrate to the brain and work to implement the re-growth of nerve tissue.

Stem cell treatments are also used in stroke recovery to enhance muscle strength and improve overall joint flexibility and control.

How are Stem Cells Administered?

Dr. Santos personally evaluates each candidate to assess their condition and develop a customized treatment plan to assist with their stroke recovery. Stem cells are typically harvested from the patient’s abdominal fat and prepared for injection via a proprietary protocol that combines high concentrations of stem cells with stromal vascular fraction (SVF), which is rich in mesenchymal stem cells and growth factors. The treatment is then administered via intravenous infusions and is expected to focus on damaged areas of the central nervous system. Dr. Santos takes special measures to optimize the transport of stem cells and SVF across the blood-brain barrier to improve central nervous system uptake and assist with stroke recovery.

Stem cell therapy for stroke recovery is completed as an outpatient procedure and the entire procedure, including stem cell harvesting, preparation, and treatment, generally lasts 3 hours.
